The reward of following Jesus
Matthew 19:23-30
23Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?"
26Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
27Peter answered him, "We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?"
28Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother[a] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
Jesus repeatedly emphasized that it was hard for the rich to enter God’s kingdom. (v23-24)
The disciples were astonished at Jesus’ word and asked, “Who then can be saved?” (v25)
Jesus answered them that with man it was impossible, but with God everything was possible. (v25)
See verse 27.
See verse 27-28.
See verse 29.
See verse 29.
The reward of following Jesus
We will have the authority to share in Jesus’ glory.
Those who are the first will be last; those who are the last will be first.
(v26)God is omnipotent
(v27) It is worth it for us to give up everything for Jesus.
(v28)Jesus Christ sits on His glorious throne
(v28)Jesus Christ is to come
(v28)Jesus Christ is to judge all the earth
(v29)God bestows eternal life
Wealth is an obstacle
See verse 23-24.
Camels are large animals in the Palestine area. A needle is the tiniest thing in the house. It was common for Jesus to use the contrast of things to teach. He used it to describe the common fact that wealth is an entanglement to mankind. It blinds the eyes of man and enslaves him. It makes a man lose his eternal blessing.
Reflection: Where does wealth stand in my life? Does it blind my eyes and make me lose my eternal blessing?
With God everything is possible
See verses 25-26.
Jesus did not specify who could or could not be God’s people.
Jesus said that there were hindrances for men to become God’s people. These hindrances make it impossible for men to become God’s people. Though it seems impossible for men, yet with God everything is possible.
God’s awesome power transcends man’s limitations and difficulties. As we can see in the example of Zacchaeus.
Reflection: What hinders me from becoming God’s people? Is it education, social status, wealth, prejudice or self? Do I rely on God or myself to get rid of the hindrances?
3>同享榮耀的權柄 the authority to share in Jesus’ glory
See verses 27-28.
It was the second time that Peter spoke. The first time was in Matthew 16:16. Jesus answered that when the new kingdom and the new earth come, they will sit on the thrones with Jesus to judge Israel. (See Romans 2:28-29)
The reward of making sacrifices for Jesus
See verse 29.
Jesus referred to the loss on this earth as an eternal glory. Whoever devotedly follows Him should continually learn the lesson of laying things down. It is considered a loss from an earthly point of view. But from the viewpoint of eternal life, the way to an abundant life is through abandonment and sharing, not striving to own.
Moreover, it is not for the twelve disciples only, it is also for those who whole-heartedly
follow Jesus. We can take Jesus’ word for it.
One hundred fold does not mean in physical quantity. It means abundance symbolically.
Reflection: Have I ever sacrificed or abandoned anything for Jesus?
Kingdom order
See verse 30.
The rich, the powerful, the senior believers or leaders in churches, who are complacent and lazy in pursuing their faith journey, will fall behind in God’s kingdom.
The poor, the average, the new believer, lay people in churches who consistently and continually look forward to the goal in God’s kingdom will be rewarded.
Therefore, we should not stop pursuing the goal in God’s kingdom lest we fall behind.
Reflection: Do I continue in my pursuit of faith? Or do I just stop and feel satisfied?

The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven
Matthew 18
The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven
1At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom
of heaven?"
2He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3And he said: "I tell you the
truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom
of heaven. 4Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the
kingdom of heaven.
"And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. 6But if anyone
causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to
have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
5
7"Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must
come, but woe to the man through whom they come! 8If your hand or your foot causes
you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled
than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9And if your eye
causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one
eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

warnings?
Having a Heart of the man in the World
1)
1At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the
kingdom of heaven?" (v1)
People in the world are often competing for power and names. This is the consequences
after we start sinning. This is exactly like what Satan does- disobeying God. There is a
story recording in Mark 10:35-41
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. "Teacher," they
said, "we want you to do for us whatever we ask. 36"What do you want me to do for
you?" he asked.37They replied, "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your
left in your glory. 38"You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can you
drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?" 39"We
can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be
baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40but to sit at my right or left is not
for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared."
41When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.
35
This is an example of people who are competing for power and names. This
situation even occurs between the core disciples of Jesus (James and John). This
tells us that it is hard to change the heart of a man in the world even though he had
followed Jesus Christ. Thus, they asked, “ Who is the greatest in the kingdom of
heaven?”
Reflection: People are competing for powers and names in the society. Should we
do the same in the church?
Be Like Little Children
2)
2He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3And he said: "I tell you
the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter
the kingdom of heaven. (v2-3)
When the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom
of heaven?” He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3And he said: "I
tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will
never enter the kingdom of heaven. What does it mean to be like little children? It
certainly does not mean that to be childish, ignorant and blind obedient. It means
that we have to be as innocent, humble, obedient, and willing to learn like children.
The requirement of entering heaven is being humble. Just like what Jesus had
said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew
5:3) Thus, we should learn from the little children. We are further away from
the kingdom of heaven when we feel that we are important. We are closer to the
kingdom of heaven when we feel that we are poor in spirit and we need to relay on
God.
Reflection: Do I think that I am experienced? Or am I still humble, innocent, and
obedient?
Welcome the Little
3)
5"And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. 6But
if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be
better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in
the depths of the sea. (v5-6) People in the world often focus on people who have
power, right, and knowledge. However, Jesus sees the world differently. He often
pays his attention on the littles, humbles, and poors. Jesus has a different definition
for what is “important” and what is “small.” As a Christian, we should follow
Jesus. However, what should we do? We could accomplish it by reading bible
everyday and interact with the Lord. After all, we need to pay for it. When we have
the eyesight of Jesus, we would start paying attention on the little. And due to Jesus
Christ, we will be willing to care and accept the littles in the society.
Reflection: What is my eyesight? Do I only look at the tall? Or Am I like Jesus who cares
for the littls?
Sin of Causing Others to Sin
4)
Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must
come, but woe to the man through whom they come! (v7) Jesus said that the person
who causes other to sin is extremely sinful. This kind of person will face severe
punishment. Thus, Jesus describes, “If anyone causes one of these little ones who
believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung
around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” He also said, “Woe to
the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come,
but woe to the man through whom they come!” Thus, we should very careful
with our behavior and never let others to abandon God because of our personal
behaviours.
Reflection: Reflect back, have I ever make others abandon God?
Spirit is More Important than Flesh
5)
8If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better
for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be
thrown into eternal fire. 9And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw
it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be
thrown into the fire of hell. (v8-9)
Jesus then tells another example: If we could gain eternal life as we loss some
organs of our bodies, such as hand, feet or eye, we will choose to loss them. We
shall not make the decisions of protecting the whole body for the prices of entering
to hell.
Reflection: Do I take what is eternal important? What barriers should I overcome?

The transfiguration of Jesus
Matthew 17:1-13 (NIV)
The Transfiguration
1After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
4Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."
5While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"
6When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid." 8When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
10The disciples asked him, "Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"
11Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 13Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

The transfiguration of Jesus
They saw Jesus only
Before and after the mountain experience
(v1)Jesus chose and trained disciples. (v1)
(v1)Jesus accentuated on praying. (v1)
Jesus was transfigured and glorified. (v2)
Jesus is the conclusion of the law (Moses) and prophet (Elijah). (v3)
(v7)Jesus comforted the disciples. (v7)
(v9)Jesus was to resurrect from the dead. (v9)
Accentuate on praying
See verse 1.
Jesus quietly took with Him Peter, James and John to a mountain. It was six days after Jesus told His disciples that He would be crucified and resurrect from the dead. Why did they go to the mountain? As recorded in Luke 9:28-36, Jesus took them to pray in the mountain.
Praying is an essential part of Jesus’ ministry on earth. In Luke 18:1, He told people to pray; in Matthew 6:6-13, He taught people how to pray; in Matthew 14:23, He prayed all the time. He faced each crucial stage in His life with prayer. A) Luke 3:21, His baptism; B) Luke 6:12, before choosing the disciples; C) Like 22:44, before His arrest; D) Like 23:46, before the end of His life.
In this verse, He took the disciples to pray in the mountain.
Reflection: How is my prayer life? Am I inspired and reminded to pray because of His example?
Train up core co-workers
See verses 1and 2.
Jesus chose and trained the twelve disciples by spending time with them daily. If we look closely, Jesus did not let each of them take part in every service or to be with Him in every situation. This time, He took only Peter, James and John with Him. Incidents like this had been recorded in three places in the Bible.
First incident: See Matthew 26:36-38; Mark 14:32-42 and Luke 22:39-46. Jesus took them to pray with Him in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Second incident: Luke 8:51, when He arrived at the house of Jarius, He did not let anyone go in with Him except Peter, John and James.
Third incident: Matthew 17:1-13; Mark 9:2-13 and Like 9:28-36, in the event of His transfiguration, Jesus took only Peter, John and James.
How so? Not everyone is suitable to serve in all situations, particularly, in the area of spiritual issues. It is not fit for a spiritual immature person to serve in these areas. This passage testified that Peter, John and James were more mature in their spirits; they were chosen and trained by Jesus. They were core of the cores.
Reflection: We oppose factions while serving in church. But we do need co-workers who are more mature in their spiritual life, just like prayer partners, partners who share with each other the joy and the burdens.
Avoid worthless words
See verse 2-4.
With Jesus, Moses and Elijah before his eyes, Peter suggested to Jesus that he wanted to build three tents for them. Peter was naïve and did not know what he was talking about. He was a quick-tongued person.
Reflection: Am I prudent in spiritual areas? Do I discern carefully and do not easily jump into conclusion?
4>上山是為下山 the purpose of entering the mountain is to be out of it
See verse 4.
Peter was fascinated by what he saw, seeing Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah. It made him want to stay there forever. Thus, he suggested building three tents for them.
Peter saw from the perspective of a human being. But, it was not God’s intention that they stayed there forever. He wanted them to leave the mountain to serve and to carry out the mission. Even though we need an experience like that, but more importantly is the action taken after leaving the mountain.
Reflection: Do I value more the experience in the mountain or the mission afterward?
Validation of Jesus’ identity
See verse 5.
Jesus is Son of God. God sent Him to the world for the salvation of mankind. He was not recognized as Son of God by the Jewish people despite of His teaching and power. He was rejected, refused and persecuted by the leaders of His time.
God declared that Jesus was His beloved Son in this passage and Matthew 3:17.
Therefore, we are sure that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God, the Messiah and the Savior.
Reflection: How much do I know Jesus? Is He a great person or a prophet or the Son of God or the Savior?
Listen to Jesus only
See verse 5.
It was the second time that God declared that Jesus was His beloved Son. He testified to Jesus’ identity.
Jesus is God’s sole representative to this world.
While Jesus was on the earth, He was an authoritative figure who represented God. Thus, obeying Jesus equals obeying God. There are many different voices and divided opinions in the world and even in churches; we must be very careful when it comes to discern Jesus’ voice. We please God by obeying Jesus.
Reflection: How can I discern Jesus voice in a world of divided-opinions and multi-democracies?
They saw Jesus only
See verses 7-8.
They fell face down on the ground when they heard the voice from the heaven. Jesus comforted them not to be afraid. All they saw was Jesus.
It means that Jesus is the only One. Law and prophets were only strategic in God’s salvation plan. Moses symbolized law and Elijah the prophets, they served as witnesses. Jesus Christ perfected God’s plan. Salvation is in Jesus Christ.
Moses and Elijah represented the Old Testament era and Jesus the New Testament. The New Testament era has come.
Reflection: Do I believe that Jesus is the only salvation? Do I rely fully on His salvation?
The core of the mission
See verse 9.
Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone of this vision. It was because that Jesus’ mission was not finished yet. It would affect God’s plan, if they spread the news before it was time.
Jesus wanted them to understand that the cross was the core of His mission. It was only through His sacrifice that human beings would be set free from under the control of sin and death. Thus is the reason for it.
Reflection: Can I prioritize things like Jesus did when it comes to mission?
John the pioneer
See verses 10-13)
Malachi prophesied that Elijah would come before Messiah. He would prepare the way for Christ. (See Malachi 3:1) Elijah symbolized John the Baptist. He was not well treated by the leaders of his time, because they did not recognize his identity.
He was a faithful servant of God. His stern personality resulted in his death. He deserved to be applauded in his service. He prepared the way that people could come to Jesus. Furthermore, he also introduced his disciples to Jesus.
Reflection: John the Baptist played his role well, he carried out God’s mission and he was stern in distinguishing right and wrong. What inspiration do I get from his example?
I
14.9.10
Picking up one’s cross to follow the Lord
Matthew 16:21-28
Jesus Predicts His Death
21From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"
23Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."
24Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25For whoever wants to save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. 26What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 27For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. 28I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

What is God teaching me (command, promise, model, rebuke, warning)?
The core of declaring the salvation
From that time on, Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. (v21)
After the Lord Jesus declared the foundation of the church as well as the authority given to it to the disciples, which is what he meant by the glorious and master plan of ‘He will build his church on earth’, he revealed the core of salvation. This salvation was his experience of death and resurrection through the cross. This revelation is based upon the foundation of ‘Jesus’ death and resurrection.’
In Jesus’ ministry, this is the first time he openly discussed the idea of his suffering and resurrection. God’s whole plan of the core of redemption is through Jesus’ death and resurrection through the cross.
Reflection: Do I understand the meaning of the cross? Do I understand the core of God’s redemption? How do I look at the cross? How do I face the cross?
Becoming Satan’s tools
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." (v22-23)
When Jesus openly declared that he would die and resurrect, Peter immediately pulled Jesus aside. Using a very serious tone of voice and with an attitude of proceeding with caution, he told Jesus, “Never, Lord. This shall never happen to you!” Jesus instantly responded saying, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."
From the Lord Jesus’ response to Peter, we can realize that Peter’s actions were not in alignment with God’s mind but with Satan’s actions. The purpose of that was to stop Jesus from accomplishing God’s master plan of saving all of mankind. Only several minutes ago, Peter had just made a declaration saying, "You are the Christ,[a] the Son of the living God” and received God’s praise saying, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. (v17) Without expecting it, a few minutes later he actually changed and became Satan’s tool, showing consideration for man’s mind. This in turn caused Jesus to rebuke him saying, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me.”
Reflection: Are my words and actions more often God’s co-workers? Or Satan’s tools?
Jesus, who adheres to the mission
Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." (v23)
From man’s perspective, Peter’s dissuasion to Jesus is in fact human. At least it is out of love and care. However, from a spiritual perspective, this kind of care actually means getting caught up in temptation and becomes Satan’s tool to stop Jesus from going towards the path of the cross and breaking God’s plan of redemption.
When faced with Satan’s words through Peter, taking advantage of people’s interdependence, and messing around with God’s plan, Jesus did not leave the slightest space nor leeway to think but used a firm tone to rebuke Peter saying, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." Clearly, in the face of temptation and obstruction Jesus did not budge. He insisted on adhering to the mission entrusted to him by God.
Reflection: When I take on a mission, how is the result, in face of temptation and obstruction? Persistence? Or compromise?
The cost of following Jesus
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. (v24)
The cross is the most common instrument of torture used by the Roman government. For those who were sentenced to death, they usually had to bear their own cross and walk the streets, step by step towards the execution ground. The Lord Jesus used this kind of image and context to describe following him, like carrying one’s own cross and having the mindset of paying the price.
The reason for this is because people who are carrying their cross towards the execution ground does not think about himself anymore including personal ideals, interests and ambitions. All of these must be completely abandoned.
By the same concept, a fully committed, wholehearted follower of the Lord should have the same mental preparation of not only having to give up self-interests (sacrificing rights). Even in face of danger, he should not flinch.
Reflection: What kind of sacrifices have I made to follow the Lord and to serve him? What price have I have to pay?
Receiving life and losing it
For whoever wants to save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. (v25)
The reason why Jesus said this was to express the idea that if a follower of Christ and servant of God cares too much for his own body and is not willing to suffer, then his spiritual life will slowly exhaust. If one only knows how to live for himself, he will lose the true meaning of life. On the other hand, when one is willing to suffer for the Lord, his spiritual life will be more abundant. When one is willing to live for the Lord, he will be able to live out the value of life.
In other words, for those who want to save their own lives and give up the Lord Jesus and his Word, they will not have a place in God’s kingdom. Conversely, those who are willing to abandon and not care for their own lives because of Jesus Christ and his Word will discover the meaning of life and have part in God’s eternal kingdom.
Reflection: Am I a person who has life? Or a person who loses his life? Can I differentiate gaining and losing?
Life is greater than the whole world
What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? (v26)
In the Lord’s eyes, life is extremely valuable. He describes it as this: the value of the whole world cannot compare with the value of life. Especially on earth, anything people think has value cannot exchange for eternal life. This includes, wealth, high status, prestigious honor, etc. These cannot exchange for eternal life.
Reflection: Do I value life more than the world? Or do I pursue the world more than life?
Facing the last judgment
For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. (v27)
The Lord Jesus has the authority of judgment, especially to have the last judgment when he comes again. At that time, all, no matter if its believers or nonbelievers must stand before the stage and accept judgment. For the Christians who have hope for eternal life, the Lord Jesus will determine the reward in heaven according to how they used their gifts, how they seized opportunities, how they fulfilled their responsibilities.
Therefore, on one hand, we must properly equip ourselves because we do not know when the Lord Jesus will come again. On the other hand, we cannot judge whether or not others will be saved because the decision of salvation in the hands of God.
Reflection: Am I ready to welcome the Lord Jesus’ coming? Do I often judge others?
Seeing the son of Man take control
I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
The Lord Jesus gave the promise of ‘some people, before they die, will see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.’ Some people think that when the Lord Jesus was transfigured on the mountain, this was already achieved because at that time, Peter, John and James had already seen God’s glory. (Matthew 17:1-3)
Also, there are others who think that these words refer to the befalling of the Holy Spirit during Pentecost and the establishment of the church. No matter what context these words are referring to, the important thing is this: we must properly prepare our hearts, which is to pursue carefully, to see the glory of God’s kingdom and to experience the ability of Jesus Christ.
Reflection: On the path of my faith, do I pursue with my heart? Am I carefully equipping myself to see the glory of God’s kingdom and to experience His ability?

Assurance of Jesus’ identity
Matthew 16:13-20 (New International Version)
13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" 14They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 15"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" 16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." 20 Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.

III. What is God teaching me (command, promise, model, rebuke, warning)?
The region of Caesarea Philippi was situated about 30 miles from northern shore of the Sea of Galilee and was governed by Herod Philippi. The cultural artifacts and remains of both the Greek and the Roman were evident everywhere, especially temples for the innumerable local Gods. When Philippi was assigned to govern this region, he not only rebuilt the city but also renamed the city by attaching his own name.
At that time, Jesus and his disciples were near the end of their ministry along the northeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee. He asked his disciples purposefully about His identity, with the intention of testing their understanding.
1) Identity of Jesus (1)
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." (v. 13-14)
Jesus learned indirectly through his disciples’ response that others had thought of him as John the Baptist, Elijah or Jeremiah. Because Jesus’ ministry was powerful and effective, people compared him to these three extraordinary prophets. However, it was not a satisfactory answer to Jesus; he continued to question his disciples.
Reflection: How much do I know Lord Jesus? If I were asked the same question, what would be my answer?
2) Identity of Jesus (2)
"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. (v. 15-17)
When Jesus directed his question at his disciples, Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus was very pleased with this answer and replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.” Obviously, Jesus is Christ, the Messiah, Savior, the Anointed One, the Son of living God.
Reflection: How many years have I been a Christian? Do I really believe and understand that Jesus is Christ and the Son of the living God?
3) Supernatural revelation of Heavenly Father
Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.” (v.17)
Upon hearing Peter’s response, proclaiming that Jesus is Christ and the Son of the living God, Jesus confirmed that such truth does not come from men but is a revelation from God. Evidently, in this world, certain understandings are gained through human experience, knowledge and teaching, while others come from God’s revelation.
Reflection: In my life, do I pursuit teaching from men or revelation from God?
4) The foundation of church
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. (v.18)
This passage remains controversial. First, the Catholic Church places great importance on this passage, believing that the rock refers to Peter. Furthermore, they consider themselves as Peter’s heirs and hold the key to the Kingdom. Consequently for a long period of time in church history, Roman Catholic Church firmly believed that church mediates salvation. The idea that salvation is the absolute grace of God was recognized only after the Reformation. God is ultimately sovereign over men. It is more commonly understood and accepted that the rock in the passage refers to Jesus Christ himself, or Peter’s confession of faith: “You are Christ, the Son of the living God.” No man alone can be the foundation of God’s church. The foundation of Church can only be Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God.
Reflection: Do I confess that Jesus Christ is the foundation and head of the church?
5) The authority of church on earth
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (v.19)
When the term ‘church’ was first used in the New Testament, its meaning in Greek is ‘a group of people who had been called’. Therefore, church is not a building, or an organization but a spiritual body. It is a body made up of a group of people who had been ‘called by God, received the Baptism in faith, saved by grace’. As a Christian, we face spiritual battle in this life, but our Lord Jesus Christ has given the authority to conquer to all who believe in him. Church and his believers, through prayers, have the authority to bind and to release.
Reflection: Do I know of this given authority? Have I ever used this authority in Jesus’ name?

Glorify God’s Holy name
Matthew 15:29-39 (New International Version)
Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand
29Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. 31The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.
32Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way."
33His disciples answered, "Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?"
34"How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked.
"Seven," they replied, "and a few small fish."
35He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 38The number of those who ate was four thousand, besides women and children. 39After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.

What is God teaching me (command, promise, model, rebuke, warning)?
Jesus attracts great crowds
Lord Jesus went up on a mountainside by the Sea of Galilee and great crowds came to him. This kind of scene can often be seen in the books of the Gospel. These crowds who were attracted and followed him might not all have the same motive, but there was absolutely no doubt that Jesus’s life had a strong attractive power. His life was completely different from the religious leaders at that time. His mighty authority and power can be seen when he healed the sick, casted away demons, performed miracles and gave his teachings. Therefore, wherever he went, there were always great crowds.
Reflection: Jesus’s life and doings attracted great crowds. How is it like for us followers of Jesus today? Do we attract people or are we resented by people?
Incomplete life
Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet. (v29-30a)
Not only did great crowds of people came to Lord Jesus and surrounded him, there were also the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many other people with different diseases. They have laid themselves at his feet. These people with different symptoms of diseases were the true portrayal of real life. We all have different problems and things often don’t go according to one’s wishes. No one is perfect, but rather incomplete and flawed.
Reflection: How is my life? Do I have peace and joy? Are things going as I wish them to be? Or is there any pain, burden, flaws or hardships?
Led before Lord Jesus
Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. (v30a)
At that time, there were many who were lame, blind, crippled, mute and many others. They needed the healing of the Lord Jesus, but not all of them were able to come by themselves. Therefore, they needed people to help them and lead the way. If there was no one who was willing to help and lead the way, they could not have come near Jesus and been healed. Thus, the role of those who helped and led the way was indispensible.
Reflection: Am I aware of those who are experiencing hardships and are in need of care and help? Do I bring them before Lord Jesus?
Jesus who heals
Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. (v30)
In this passage, it is clearly stated that at that time, whether it be the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute or many others, whoever laid themselves at the feet of Jesus were healed by him. It shows that Lord Jesus has healing power and he is the Lord who heals people and restores them.
Reflection: How much do I know about Lord Jesus? How many times have I been restored and healed by Jesus (physically, spiritually, personality and character wise)?
Glory to the Holy name of God
The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. (v31)
According to the book of Mark, at that time Jesus was passing by Decapolis— a region where the Gentiles lived. These Gentiles were very amazed as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they also praised the God of Israel.
這件事一方面顯示,藉著醫治事件,讓上帝的聖名得著榮耀;
This incident showed that God’s Holy name was glorified through Jesus’s healing performances. On the other hand, it also showed that even the Gentiles were touched and praised the God of Israel.
Reflection: Do my words and deeds glorify God’s Holy name? Even the Gentiles knew to praise God, what about me? Do I praise God often?
Holistic compassion of Jesus
Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way." (v32)
There is no doubt that Jesus cares for men’s spiritual life. But from this passage, we notice that not only did Jesus care for the spiritual needs, he also cared for the physical needs. It is clear that the care Jesus has for men is complete and holistic.
Reflection: How extensive do I go when I spread the gospel and care for others? Do I try to learn the holistic compassion of Jesus?
How many loaves of bread you have in your hand
Clearly this miracle of seven loaves of bread and a few small fish was not relied on external resources but rather on what the disciples had in their hands at that moment. When Lord Jesus took over and gave thanks, the miracle was accomplished. When God called on Moses, God used that ordinary staff in his hand to perform miraculous sings and Moses eventually led the Israelites out of Egypt.
Nowadays, some smaller-sized churches often say that they can’t do anything because they don’t have enough money, people, space or resources. However, this is a wrong way of thinking!
Reflection: When serving God, do I always seek external resources first and wait till I have enough resources? Or do I make use of what I have at the moment and immediately place it before God?
Jesus who makes many from less
This is a very clear miracle— feeding four thousand men with seven loaves of bread and a few small fish and even having leftovers.
This incident shows us that Jesus is truly the God who can make many from less. Thus, it doesn’t matter how much we have in our hands. As long as we bring them before Jesus and offer with a joyful heart, they will satisfy many needs of others after His blessing. Especially when we are willing to offer ourselves to be broken by Jesus, many hungry lives will be satisfied by this miraculous power. Not only can it satisfy all needs, there will even be surplus.
Reflection: Have I ever offered my life to be used by Jesus? Have I experienced something like the incident of seven loaves of bread and a few fish?
