Ezra 4:1-10 (NIV)
Opposition to the Rebuilding
1 When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel, 2 they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families and said, "Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here."
3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel answered, "You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We alone will build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us."
4 Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building. [a] 5 They hired counselors to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia.
Later Opposition Under Xerxes and Artaxerxes
6 At the beginning of the reign of Xerxes, [b] they lodged an accusation against the people of Judah and Jerusalem.
7 And in the days of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel and the rest of his associates wrote a letter to Artaxerxes. The letter was written in Aramaic script and in the Aramaic language. [c] , [d]
8 Rehum the commanding officer and Shimshai the secretary wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king as follows:
9 Rehum the commanding officer and Shimshai the secretary, together with the rest of their associates—the judges and officials over the men from Tripolis, Persia, [e] Erech and Babylon, the Elamites of Susa, 10 and the other people whom the great and honorable Ashurbanipal [f] deported and settled in the city of Samaria and elsewhere in Trans-Euphrates.
Satan’s conspiracy
Wisdom of the leaders’
God is worthy of praise.
1 When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel, 2 they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families and said, "Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here." (v1-2)
Ezra3:3 mentioned that the people who returned to Jerusalem were threatened by the neighboring people. Those people were the Samaritans who felt threatened by the sudden arrival of the forty to fifty thousands of Israelites. The Israelites built their altar and sacrificed burnt offerings and they built the foundation of the temple and worshipped and celebrated with great loud voices. No doubt, these activities had become a threat to the Samaritans, thus they set out to go against the work of the Israelites’ building of the temple.
Their tactics were diplomatic talks and conspiracies hidden under friendly smiles. They went to see Zerubbabel and the leaders of the families. With hypocritical friendliness, they presented themselves as people being related to the Israelites. The Samaritans claimed that since the reign of Esarhaddon king of Assyria over them, they had been worshipping the same God as the Israelites had. They suggested that since they worshipped the same God, they should see themselves as one family, thus, they requested to build the temple together with the Israelites.
Judging from their words, they seemed to be kind and willing to give a helping hand in the work of building the temple. However, their true purpose was to keep a watchful eye on the Israelites, to blend into their work force to destroy their work, to prevent the restoration of the Israelites and to prevent Jerusalem from becoming strong again.
The Israelites encountered obstacles while they were building the temple. As of today, when we serve in a church setting, we may as well encounter obstacles. Satan will take every opportunity and use any tactic to attack us; he will even wear the mask of friendliness to lure us away from our service in the Lord.
Recognize the schemes and stand firm
But Zerubbabel, Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel answered, "You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We alone will build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us." (V3)
Zerubbabel, Jeshua and the leaders of the families of Israel recognized their ulterior motives and sternly refused them, saying, “You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We alone will build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us.”
Those people not only worshipped God, they also worshipped other gods. They treated God like they treated one of the gods. The Israelite leaders were wise in discerning and not giving in. They wisely distinguished the pagans from the Israelites lest the work in building the temple be compromised.
It shows that the service in the Lord is absolutely different from the secular volunteer work. It should not be taken lightly and not everyone is allowed to serve. If we let someone who does not know nor revere God to serve in the church, it will bring about disturbances and even destruction.
Deterrence from every side
4 Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building. 5 They hired counselors to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia. (V4-5)
When their conspiracy failed in the first round, they publicly set out to disturb and to deter the Israelites. They attacked from every side and from the inside out.
First, they attacked directly to weaken their hands, to frustrate them.
Secondly, they bribed the influential officials to deter them from working.
It shows that the enemy will do his best to deter our service in the Lord. Therefore, we should stay alert.
5 They hired counselors to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia. 8 Rehum the commanding officer and Shimshai the secretary wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king. (v5-8)
The disturbance had been around for a long period of time, from the reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia. As described in the Bible:
First, at the beginning of the reign of Xerxes, they lodged an accusation against the people of Judah and Jerusalem.
Secondly, Rehum, the commanding officer and Shimshai, the secretary wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king.
It is obvious that deterrence from the enemy Satan is continuous.
