Dieu aime un serviteur

Matthieu 12:15-21

28.7.10

The true meaning of the Sabbath.

Lord of the Sabbath

1At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. 2When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath."

3He answered, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? 6I tell you that one[a] greater than the temple is here. 7If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,'[b] you would not have condemned the innocent. 8For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

9Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"

11He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."

13Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.

What is God teaching me (command, promise, model, rebuke, warning)?

1>
The true meaning of establishing the Sabbath

On the surface, it seems like the Jewish people, especially the Pharisees, extremely value the Law and follows the Law. However, this Law, under the constraint and burdens of their traditions, has turned away from the spirit of loving people. It has become a mere formality or doctrine after they defined it. As a consequence, not only can’t the people of God receive freedom and enjoy love because the Law, they are forced to bear the heavy burdens and get tied up.

In fact, the intention of God to establish the Sabbath is very simple and very clear—that is, God’s people can find one day in their busy life to focus on God and worship God without having to work. To think and remember God’s grace and love is an enjoyment of ease, comfort and rest for God’s people.

Reflection: Do I understand the meaning behind the Sabbath established by God? Have I truly enjoyed the Sabbath? Or have I been losing myself in this busy world and carrying a heavy burden, even being so tied up?

2>
Restore the spirit of the Sabbath

According to the scripture, as Jesus went through the grainfields on one Sabbath, his disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing hwat is unlawful on the Sabbath.” In response of their accusation, Jesus explained the behavior of his disciples with two examples.

The first example: When David and his companions were hungry, they entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread. Because only the priests can eat the bread, so what David and his companions did was unlawful according to standard of the Pharisees, but tolerated!

The second example: On the Sabbath the priests killed many animals for offerings. According to the standard of the Pharisees, this too was unlawful, but still it was still tolerated!

In this scripture, it is shown that Jesus and his disciples and the Pharisees each has different understanding of the Sabbath. The Pharisees rigidly adhere to the words of the Law, whereas Jesus and his disciples help accomplish the needs in life. The Pharisees were tied down to their Jewish traditional culture, whereas Jesus and his disciples were looking past through the culture. The Pharisees misinterpreted the Law and stuck to it, whereas Jesus and his disciples restore the loving spirit of the Law!

Reflection: Which part in your personal life of faith has become a routine and lost its meaning and reason? Or even so tied down by the Law that it has lost the spirit of love and righteousness?

3>
Jesus is greater than the temple

Jesus said to the Pharisees, “I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.” (v6) Valuing the ceremony and laws of the temple is not a bad thing, but excessively valuing and persisting can lead to people attending to the superficial as opposed to the essentials. The Pharisees were like this— they forgot that the true purpose of the temple was to bring men to God because they were overly focusing on the rules.

Now Jesus has come to the world and was present within them. Jesus is more important than the temple and Jesus is also greater than the temple. This is because Jesus has more power to bring men before God than the temple and its religious ceremonies. Especially when Jesus himself IS God, He then is definitely greater than the temple. Therefore, Jesus said, “I tell you that one greater than the temple is here”— ME (Lord Jesus)!

Reflection: Often times do I focus on the place, the manner and the tools of the worship more than the object of the worship—the Holy Trinity God, without noticing?

4>
Desires mercy but not sacrifice

In the bible, Jesus said “if you had known what these words mean, ’I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.” (v7) Jesus quoted on prophet Hosea, “for I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” (Hosea 6:6) This means that God values one’s inner heart more than any external rites or offerings.

Reflection: Has the routine of attending to the Sunday service, the Holy Communion and constant serving in church made me focus on the appearance and formality only? Have I lost the heart to be sincere, reverent, humble and repentant?

5>
Lord of the Sabbath

Jesus said “for the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (v8) Jesus told the Pharisees that He is the Lord of the Sabbath. This means that He is greater than the Sabbath (the Law) because He established the Sabbath.

However, the Pharisees accused Jesus’ disciples for doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath because they did not understand that Jesus is the Son of God and that He established the Sabbath (the Law). Therefore, the person who establishes the Sabbath (the Law) is definitely greater than the Sabbath and has the power to be in charge of the Sabbath (the Law).

Reflection: Do I only share with others about the Law, the principles and regulations but not a renewed life and a life of beautiful testimony for God?

6>
The ignorant Pharisees

The Pharisees thought they were the ones who were reverent towards God and strictly following the Law. They called themselves the righteous and saw Jesus as being heterodox, but they had no idea of their own fault of being tied down to the Law. They looked for chances to accuse Jesus and kill Jesus. Meanwhile, they even set Jesus up in order to find faults against him, thinking that they were working for God!

Jesus went into their synagogue once and a man with a shriveled hand was there. The Pharisees, thinking that they had caught the opportunity to accuse Jesus, asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” Jesus used the example of “David and his companions eating the consecrated bread in God’s house” and “the priests did more things on the Sabbath” to explain his behavior and healed the man’s hand. The Pharisees saw that there was nothing they could do and went out, but they still wouldn’t give up and started to plot how they might kill Jesus. From the above description, we can see that the Pharisees were an ignorant group of people.

Reflection: Have I ever made the same mistake the Pharisees did—lost , ignorant, but still thinks so full of oneself?

My Prayer/Life application

Take the yoke of the Lord

Matthew 11:20-30 (New International Version)
Woe on Unrepentant Cities

20Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21"Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.22But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths.[a] If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."
Rest for the Weary

25At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

27"All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Jesus Christ who is gentle and humble in heart (v29)

What is God teaching me (command, promise, model, rebuke, warning)?

Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.22But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths.[a] If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."(v21-24)
Korazin, Bethsaida, Capernaum ; these three cities are located in the Northwest of the Sea of the Galilee. Jesus stayed in the area for some time so the local residents have all seen the miracles Jesus did and they have all heard the lessons Jesus taught about the kingdom of heaven. But they were still hard in heart and were not willing to repent, so Jesus felt sad for the residents of the three cities.
In addition, Tyre and Sodom were 35 miles and 65 miles away from the sea of Galilee. Sodom was located about a hundred miles in the south. People living in these three cities were all Gentiles. In the time of the old testament, the residents of the three cities were doing evil. But Jesus compared these people to the people of Korazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum. He said the people of Tyre, Sidon and Sodom have all already repented. However, those in Korazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum were unwilling to repent.
Shows: The residents of Korazin, Bethsaida and Capernuam had hearts so unbelievably stubborn.
Reflection: How are our hearts compared to the ones in Korazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum? How would Jesus Christ think of it? What is my own condition?

是的,天父啊,這樣的安排都是出於你的美意!25At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.(v25-26)
Jesus explained that one of the reasons people refused to believe was pride in the heart. They are self-conceited. They are misled by the limited knowledge and the minds, and this prevents them to see the glory of God.
Therefore, through prayers, Jesus Christ showed the fact that He has hidden things from the wise and learned and revealed them to little children. Through the point of view of faith, those who think themselves wise and smart are often mistaken. Therefore, those who are humble often receive the blessings.
Reflection: What is my attitude toward the gospel of truth and salvation? Do I consider myself smart or do I have a humble attitude?

All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(v27)
Jesus then talked about the relationship between himself and the Heavenly Father which is in unity and very close. First He mentioned that all things have been committed to him by His Father, which meant everything he had on Earth were all given by God. Also, everything he did on Earth were acted according to God’s will.
Then he said that “no one know s the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” In addition, if it is not through Jesus Christ, no one would really know God. Therefore, Jesus Christ is the imagine of God, so one can only fully know God if knowing Jesus Christ.
Reflection: How much do I know about the trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) of God? Do I seek to get to know Christ the Lord? By knowing the Lord Jesus, do I understand better God?

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."(v28-30)
Burden is a very common phenomenon to people of every generation. Jesus used the yoke to describe the burden of life. The yoke is used to control the horses and oxen to plow the fields or to carry the tools.
The burden of life is like a great yoke which controls our lives and which will eventually become unbearable.
In addition, Jesus also often used yoke to describe the “law abiding” of the Pharisees which becomes a burden.
The main point is that Lord Jesus invited everyone to go to Him because he will give rest. And those who go to Him must learn from Him, to be gentle and humble in heart, to find rest in soul. And just like He said: ”For my yoke is easy and my burden in light”
Reflection: Am I currently carrying my burden alone? Or did I come before God to carry His’?

John the Baptist’s doubts

1After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.

2When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples

3to ask him, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?"

4Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see:

5The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[b]are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

6Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."

7As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces.

9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

10This is the one about whom it is written:
" 'I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.'

4> Jesus Christ who can do all sorts of healing miracles. (v14-15)

5> Jesus Christ who turn death into life. (v15)

6> God who sends messenger. (v10)

3. What is the lesson (command, promised, example, blame, warning)?

1> Nonstop Jesus

As recorded in verse one in the bible: After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.

We all know that Jesus has only worked in this world for a short period of three years, in order to complete the mission entrusted by God, which is to spread the gospel of the Kingdome, his schedule was tight, a nonstop rush.

Although the education of his twelve disciples is the key for the accomplishment of his mission, it was also the most urgent task. While training His disciples, He didn’t forget to gain some time, use opportunities to spread the gospel of Kingdome to people in Israel.

Reflection:

What’s my attitude when I’m serving? Active and positive?

My feeling while preaching the gospel? Feeling sad for those depraved souls?

While particularly facing so many folks who have not yet know the Lord, do you feel a sense of urgency in your mind?

2> Perplexity of John the Baptist

According to Chapter 3 verse 13-15, this is when Jesus was in Jordan River, preparing to receive baptize of John the Baptist, through dialogue with each other, John the Baptist had learned that Jesus had the identity of the Messiah. However, the fact that he had experienced prisoning, suffering, and had brought many rumors from the outside, causes a doubt toward Jesus identity. Indeed, was Jesus the promise of God, the Messiah who people had been waiting for? He wasn’t sure about that.

However, John the Baptist was a loyal, brave prophet; he is also God’s servant, also Jesus’ pioneer. Therefore, facing Jesus’ identity, he shouldn’t be doubtful. But John the Baptist, after all, is a man, as a human being, it is normal to have weakness and limitations.

Even so, we cannot deny all this because of John’s doubt. Just think: On the Mount Carmel, Elijah, had been threatened by the Queen Jezebel while he himself went a day’s journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. (1 Kings 19:4) Because he is a man, so he has human being’s weakness.

Hence, the world, no matter how brilliant, great leader will inevitably be timid and weak, even frustrated, fall. Because they are human, not God.

Reflection:

How much do I know about human nature?

When you face the weakness of human nature, how do you deal with it? A complete failure/defeat? Or: take a lesson? And re-stand?

3> Keep in mind God’s Kingdome

As it is mentioned in Chapter 4 verse 12: John the Baptist was sent to prison because of his uprightness, wasn’t afraid of power and had criticized Herod incest case. Due to his misfortune, and rumors from the outside, he was in doubt toward Jesus identity, so he sent his disciples to see Jesus, interrogate him and made things clear.

This shows that John the Baptist’s body, despite being in jail. But his heart is still concerned about things of the “Messiah”, which means that he is concerned about stuff in the Kingdome of God. This proves that John the Baptist, always keep in mind God’s Kingdome!

Reflection: despite his body in the prison, John the Baptist still cares about stuff of the Kingdome of God. What about you? Totally free, how much do you care about the Kingdome of God?

4> The secret to prevent falling

When John the Baptist’s faith was shaking, he immediately sent his disciples to ask the Lord Jesus, this is his secret: though puzzled, but not fall over. If John the Baptist had sent his disciples to ask Herod, Pharisees, the answer wouldn’t be the same, his faith would shake more and he will even face a crushing defeat.

Jesus Christ can let the blind sees, can let the lame walks, can clean leprosy, can let the deaf hears, can turn death into life, can let the poor hears the gospel, etc., this can solidifies his faith.

Reflection: When you are weak in confidence, who are you usually looking for? Looking for friends who do not believe? Looking for elders who believe? Or even looking for Jesus?

5> Proving identity by acting

When the disciples of John the Baptist ask Jesus: “you are the one mentioned by John the Baptist, or are we waiting for the other one?” Then, Jesus didn’t directly answer “yes” or “no”.

Jesus told them: “Go back and tell what you’ve heard, what you’ve seen to John.” Which are: blind can see, lame can walk, leprosy got cleaned, deaf can hear, resurrection of death, poor can hear gospel. Jesus, by His acts, proves that He is the “Messiah” who God had promised.

The specific act, is the most specific description, is a strong testimony. About “proving identity by acting”, Jesus has also said in John chapter 13 verse 34-35: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Reflection:

Jesus acts specifically, to prove that He is the Messiah. Jesus then orders us to love one another, to prove that we are His disciples. In our daily, what do we do to prove our Christian identity?

6> Complimented pioneer

When John the Baptist’s disciples had leaved, Jesus started talking about John the Baptist, in the discussion, He didn’t underestimate nor blame him, but instead, was complimenting him. Jesus used beautiful comparisons to describe John the Baptist. He said: “Before, when you were looking for John in the Wilderness, what did you want to see?”

Jesus first described him, he is not a reed blown by the wind. Which means: John is not someone who doesn’t have his own minds. Jesus then described as someone who doesn’t seem to wear soft clothes. Which means: John is not someone who enjoys pleasure all the time, nor someone that is undetermined.

John the Baptist is a prophet, is the pioneer of the Messiah predicted in the Old Testament. Since his arrival, not only he ended the old era, but opened a new one. Therefore, Jesus complimented him greater than the prophets.

Reflection:

As a Christian, am I complimented in Jesus eye? Or am I blamed?

Things need to pay off when becoming a disciples

Matthew 10:34-42 (New International Version)

34"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
" 'a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law -
36a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.'[a]

37"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

40"He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me. 41Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward. 42And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward."

I. Core Message

Content:

  1. Conflicts occur between believe or not believe since Jesus is coming. (v34-36)
  2. Talking about three kinds people who don’t deserve to follow Jesus (v37-38)
  3. Jesus talks about life from the point of view of winning and losing (v39)
  4. Jesus said people who treat god’s servants good with receive rewards (v40-42)

Theme:

  1. Things need to pay off when becoming a disciples
  2. Rewards of being a disciples

II. Who are God, Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit?

  1. Jesus Christ who brings conflicts to the society (v34-36)
  2. Jesus Christ who is worthy for our devotions (v37-39)
  3. God who is worthy for us to receive and worship
  4. God who send Jesus Christ (v40)
  5. God who send his servants (v41)
  6. God who gives rewards (v41-42)

III. What does the passage teach us (about commands, promises, examples, exhortations, and warnings?)

  1. Sources of Conflicts

This script is harder to be understood. It brings up misunderstanding easily. People often wonder why Jesus Christ does not bring peace to the world; instead, he brings conflicts. In fact, Jesus Christ does not bring conflict. He still brings love and peace to the world. The problem is that Satan is powerful. He always tries to make people resist the truths. Thus, when a person is making a decision regarding faith, there must exists an opposing force. This force often comes from people who are close to you. For example, from parent, family, and friends. This sometimes even break the relationship between two parties. We can see that Satan is the one who actually brings the conflict.

Reflection: Have I received pressures after I follow Jesus? Have I faced any conflicts

  1. Order of Love

In the scripture, Jesus talked about three kinds of people who do not deserve to follow him. First kind is people who love their parents more than Jesus. Second is who loves his son or daughters more than Jesus. Third kind is who does not take cross and follow Jesus. Jesus does not tell us not to love our parents, son and daughter. He is just saying that we should love him more than we love our parents, son and daughters. By doing so, we are worthy to follow him, and become his disciples. According to Jesus teaching, we are not choosing between him and “parents, and son and daughter.” He is teaching us that we need to do both, but there exist the order.

Reflection: How much do I love Christ? Do I love my parent, brothers and sisters, and friends more?

  1. What we need to pay off when we follow Christ

In the scripture, Jesus talked about three kinds of people who do not deserve to follow him. First kind is people who love their parents more than Jesus. Second is who loves his son or daughters more than Jesus. Third kind is who does not take cross and follow Jesus. We all know that, at the time of Jesus, it was harsh to take the cross. These people may even loss their lives. Thus, Jesus is teaching us, people who decide to follow us need to prepare their heart that they will suffer for Christ. In other words, we need to pay for following Christ.

Reflection: How many years have I followed Jesus? Have I sacrifice anything for him?

  1. Talking about Christ from an angle of winning and losing.

Jesus said, “. 39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” What Jesus is teaching us is that, people who hold tight to his life will loss the rewards coming from God. This is telling us that if we take what are from the world seriously, we will feel empty in our heart. On the other hand, If we do not take what we have in the world seriously, we will be able to follow Christ more seriously. And we will feel that our lives are more abundant. Thus, people who are willing to follow Jesus for all cost, their lives is abundant, and they will receive eternal life.

Reflection: What do I live for? What does life means to me? Will I find my life? Or Will I lose my life?

  1. Power of Pleading

Jesus said, “40"He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me.

Jewish believe that when they receive the prophets of someone, they are receiving who send them as well. Thus, when you show respects to the prophets, you are showing respects to the person who send them. Jesus used this concept to point out that: Due to God, people who receive his servants will receive rewards from God. Even though the person he receives is the little one, he will still receive rewards.

Reflection: Have I ever received anyone? Do I receive pastors or people who are on missions? Have I ever helped any brothers and sisters? Have I ever received Christ?

20.7.10

Life is more than precious!

Matthew 10:24-33

24"A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub,[a] how much more the members of his household!

26"So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny[b]? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. 30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

32"Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.

Jesus said, “A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.” When it comes to facing severe persecution, a teacher or a master always suffers more than his student or his servant does. Whenever we think of the severe persecution that our Master faced, we will think that the persecution we are facing is much lighter to bear and easier to withstand. Jesus’ words were meant to comfort those who would face persecution for His sake. (V24-25)

(v26-27)See verses 26 and 27.

(v28)See verse 28.
(v29-30)See verses 29 and 30.
(v32-33)See verses 32 and 33.

Life is more than precious!
Do not worry about facing persecution.

(v28)God rules over flesh and soul. (V28)
(v29-30) God rules over the universe.(v29-30)
(v30) God profoundly understands, loves and protects us. (v30)
(v32-33)God, the Father (v 32-33)
(v32-33)Jesus Christ, the Son (v 32-33)

Comfort from Jesus

Verses 24-26 were words to comfort the disciples who would face persecution one day. It reminded them that the persecution that Jesus faced was far greater than that of theirs. He was brutally flogged and crucified. When compared to what Jesus had gone through, the persecution that the disciples faced would have been counted as nothing. Therefore, when we face persecution while serving, it will be much lighter to bear and easier to withstand.
Reflection: Have I ever been persecuted for Jesus’ sake? How do I feel when I think of the excruciating pain Jesus experienced on the cross? Am I comforted because of it?
Things hidden will be exposed

See verses 26 and 27.

A Taiwanese proverb says “Eggs are not without pores.” There is no escape from under the law. No one can walk without leaving a track behind. These are words of wisdom passed down from the experienced forefathers. It rings true all the time.
Do not ever think that no one sees what you do in secret. Keep this in mind, every hidden thing will be revealed and every secret will be exposed. God knows everything and He knows our heart and mind. No one can hide before Him!

Reflection: Do I believe that hidden things will be revealed and secret things will be exposed? Do I experience something like that?
Be afraid of God only
To strengthen His disciples, Jesus told them, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

We need not be afraid of anyone except God, because He is the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell. The consequence of disobeying God is scarier than to be martyred.

Reflection: How much do I know of God? What is my attitude toward Him? Do I revere Him from the bottom of my heart?
God values life

Jesus tells us in verses 29-31 that the hairs of our head are all numbered by God. It reveals God’s care for us; God knows every detail of our life and sees us as precious ones.
Reflection: Do I understand the meaning and value of life? Do I appreciate and respect the value of other people’s lives? Do I accept and affirm the meaning of my life?
The consequences of acknowledging and not acknowledging the Lord

See verses 32-33.

To acknowledge Jesus means not only to do it through the words of our mouth, but also to identify ourselves with His stand. Particularly, we need to be united with Him and to be willing to die with Him and suffer His sufferings. Those who do not acknowledge the Lord are the ones who deny, refuse and do not know Him. They have nothing to do with Him. For those who acknowledge the Lord and those who do not, the consequences are different indeed.
Reflection: Do I say grace before meals other than in my house and at church? Do I show my identity as a Christian?

15.7.10

Envoyé pour servir!

Matthieu 10:01-15
2 Voici les noms des douze *apôtres: d'abord, *Simon appelé Pierre puis André son frère; *Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et Jean son frère;
3 Philippe et Barthélemy; Thomas et Matthieu, le *collecteur d'impôts; *Jacques, fils d'Alphée, et Thaddée;

14.7.10

The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few

Jesus Heals the Blind and Mute

27As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" 28When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied.

29Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith will it be done to you"; 30and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, "See that no one knows about this." 31But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.

32While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel."

34But the Pharisees said, "It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons."

The Workers Are Few

35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."

I. Message:

Theme:

  1. Lord! We believe.
  2. According to your faith will it be done to you.
  3. The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few

II. Who is God? Who is Jesus Christ? Who is Holy Spirit?

  1. Jesus Christ, son of David. (v27)
  2. Jesus the Messiah and savior (v27)
  3. Jesus Christ who has the authority to heal and to perform miracle (v29-30)
  4. Jesus’ widespread reputation (v31)

III. What is God teaching me (command, promise, model, rebuke, warning)?

1) Physically but not spiritually blind

These two men were physically blind, but when they found out that Jesus was passing by, they followed him closely and called out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" ‘Son of David’ represents Messiah or Savior. Obviously, they knew Jesus was their hope in regaining their sight. They desperately called out and begged for help, and ended up receiving! This proves that although these two men were physically blind, their spiritual sight was clear. Today, many people are the opposite of this. Although they have physical sight but they are spiritually blind.

Reflection: What kind of person am I, spiritually blind or perceiving?

2) Miracle by faith

This was a miracle of healing, the restoration of sight. If we pay closer attention to the scripture specifically the conversation between Jesus and the blind men, we can see that in fact ‘faith’ was the key to this miracle of healing. Because in the healing process, Jesus asked them first, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied. Thus, Lord Jesus touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith will it be done to you.” Their sight was restored. Evidently, the miracle was accomplished through faith.

Reflection: What kind of faith do I have in Jesus? What miracle have I experienced?

3) Recounting God’s wonderful deeds

After having been healed by Jesus, these two previously blind men went out and told many all over the region about what Jesus had done for them against the Lord’s stern command to “see that no one knows about this." (Performing miracle was not Jesus’ purpose on earth.) From their action, we see that the two men must have been overjoyed and unable to withhold their excitement, thus unceasingly spread the news of the miracle. In contrast, today, we too have experienced salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, and have even received healing and the direct command to spread the gospel and to be his witness. However, are we active or silent in our response? Considering the action of these two blind men, shouldn’t we be ashamed?

Reflection: Has the salvation through Jesus Christ been witnessed throughout my community and among my peers and colleagues?

4) Four different characters

In the scripture following the restoration of sight is the healing of the demon-possessed mute. In this event, we discover four different characters. a) the demon who possessed the man: demon oppress and bound people to cause the lost of identity, suffering and to abandon God. b) the demon possessed man: lost of the original identity, suffering gravely to the point of abandoning God. c) the one who led the mute, a nameless hero, not only received the gratitude of the mute but was also remembered forever. d) The Lord who heals: he is the source of life, full of power and authority, even overcoming the demon, the power of evil.

According to the analysis of the above four characters, we can know that a Christian should assume the third role, that is to lead others to Lord Jesus Christ, especially being mindful of those who are weak, in pain, poor, oppressed and in mourning.

Reflection: Between the demon-possessed and the one who led the mute, which of the two roles do I often play?

5) Divergent reactions

When the demon was driven out by Jesus, the mute began to speak, resulting in two different reactions among the crowd: a) witnesses who believed in Jesus said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel." Amazed, excited and thankful! b) Pharisees who did not believe in Jesus, said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons." They were envious, anxious, and twisted the truth! Obviously, the crowd witnessed the amazing work of God whereas the Pharisees, not only did not see God’s work, they also offended Jesus, claiming that his work was done by the prince of demons.

Reflection: If I were present at the scene, what would have been my reaction, similar to the believers or the Pharisees?

6) Disease and spiritual bondage

According to our common sense and experience, being mute is a handicap and disease. However through the healing performed, we discover that the mute was not a real disease; it is not a physical ailment or damage to the vocal cord. The real cause is the bondage by the demon; as soon as the demon was driven out, the person was able to speak. Once again proving that in practical life, some disease is related to demons! Therefore, medical doctors can address physical ailment, but the disease caused by bondage of demon requires Jesus’ intervention and help!

Reflection: Do I believe in the relationship between physical disease and bondage by demon? Have I experienced it? Am I able to make the distinction?

7) Model for community involvement

The scripture said, “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.” In this we see that our Lord Jesus, while on earth, did not retreat to the temple, living a segregated life from the world. Instead, he was actively involved in the community caring for people, loving, supporting and satisfying them. This is the model set for us by Lord Jesus!

Reflection: Is our church open to the community, involved in it or closed to and segregated from it?

8) Jesus’ work

The scripture said, “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.” We learn from this passage that Jesus’ work on earth included three aspects: teaching the synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. This is an example set by Lord Jesus for us concerning the matter of our serving.

Reflection: Does today’s churches serve in these three capacities: teaching, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness (spiritual and physical)?

IV. Prayer/ Life Application
