Identity and mission of Jesus Christ

October 7th, 2009
John 5: 19--29

19Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. 21For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.
24"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. 25I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. 27And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
28"Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

III. What did I learn from the lesson (command, promise, example, blame, and warning)?

Background: In the last section of scripture verse 1-18 stated that: Lord Jesus did treat the sick on the day of Sabbath and at the same time describes himself equal to God. It had angry Jewish leaders, even to the point of wanting to kill Him. Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ explains His relationship with God, His identity and His mission in further detailed.

1. The relationship between Father and Son are inseparable

In the last section of scripture, the Lord Jesus has been through work shows that: God is his father, and He is God's son. (V17) In this scripture Lord Jesus further elaborate His relationships with God (Father). In particular:

a. “Father” is the one who “sent” me
b.(V19、v21-22)The "Son" never does anything according to His own will but to follow the wish of “Father”. Whatever the Father does the Son also does.
c.(v20)The "Father, Son" relationship is established based not on “power” but on "love"
d.(v23) The relationship between Father and Son are inseparable. Because that: “All may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.”

2> Jesus received dual mission from God
According to the account of Jesus, we found that He received a dual mission from God:

a.Gift of Life
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (3:16) The promise of "eternal life" is very clear and what is the meaning of "eternal life" represented?
First: Present life---to exchange for eternal life

"I tell you the truth; whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life."

Second: Eternal--- resurrect from the dead

"For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. "(v21)"I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. "(v25) (After the end of physical life, there are still eternal life)

b.Carry out the judgment

(v22)The Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son
(v27)He has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man
(v29)Those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

"Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. "(3:18) The judgment outcome determine by individual's response(believe it or not) to Jesus.
