The testimony of the empty grave

John 20:1-10

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"

3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. 8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

10Then the disciples went back to their homes,

III. What does the passage teach us (about commands, promises, examples, exhortations and warnings)?

1) A resurrection difficult to believe

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" 9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

It is hard for man to believe in Jesus’ resurrection, according to one’s rationality and experiences. Even though it is recorded in the Bible, and in spite of Jesus prophesying it several times, it was hard for people, including his disciples and the women who followed him closely, to accept this fact. To understand such a resurrection, one may consider four stages of belief:

a) Complete disbelief: regarding the resurrection as a myth, such as to disregard its truth (20:2)

b) Searching for answers: similar to Peter, approaching the question rationally with proof, but still not fully understanding what is happening (20:6)

c) Meeting Christ: having a personal encounter, accepting his resurrection (20:16)

d) Commitment: offering oneself to the Lord (20:28)

Reflection: What stage am I in my belief of Jesus’ resurrection?

2) The woman who experienced Christ’s love

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 9When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. (Mark 16:9) Some scholars also believe that she was the one who cried at the feet of Jesus, and whose sin was forgiven (Luke 7:36-50).

Regardless, this woman must have experienced Christ’s love deeply, such as to rise early on the first day of the week, before the sun was up, to bring incense to see Jesus. She was the first to arrive at the tomb, and to have seen it empty.

Reflection: What can I learn from Mary Magdalene? How do I express my love to God?

3) An uncontainable miraculous resurrection

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

In fact, the resurrecting Christ is not limited to an empty grave. Whether or not the tomb was opened or not, does not affect Christ’s resurrection. It follows that the tomb was open, not to allow Jesus to get out, but rather for the disciples and the others to enter. It was to have them understand that Jesus had already resurrected. The entrance to the tomb in no way limits Christ’s resurrection!

Reflection: Do I believe with absolutely no doubt that Christ has risen from the dead?

4) A witness to Christ’s resurrection

3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. 8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.

According to Jewish traditions, women could not be considered witnesses. Thus, even thought Mary Magdalene was the first to see the empty grave, the fact that she was a woman, discounts her attestations. Hence, her message that was passed on to John and Peter, thereby made John and Peter the first witnesses of Christ’s resurrection.

Reflection: Has the person I am today bore witness to Christ’s resurrection?

5) Still uncomprehending the Bible

9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

Even though Jesus’ resurrection was long foreseen in scriptures, many of his disciples still did not comprehend the meaning of the Bible. They were skeptical about his resurrection. This shows that a pursuit of understanding the Bible, especially the implications of Biblical messages, is of utmost importance for his followers.

Reflection: Do I make an effort to receive and reflect daily upon the word of the Lord, and to understand his will?
