9 "Therefore I bring charges against you again,” declares the LORD. "And I will bring charges against your children's children. 10 Cross over to the coasts of Kittim and look, send to Kedar and observe closely; see if there has ever been anything like this: 11 Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols. 12 Be appalled at this, O heavens, and shudder with great horror," declares the LORD. 13 "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. 14 Is Israel a servant, a slave by birth? Why then has he become plunder? 15 Lions have roared; they have growled at him. They have laid waste his land; his towns are burned and deserted. 16 Also, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have shaved the crown of your head.17 Have you not brought this on yourselves by forsaking the LORD your God when he led you in the way? 18 Now why go to Egypt to drink water from the Shih ? And why go to Assyria to drink water from the River? 19 Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the LORD your God and have no awe of me," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.

What lessons (command, covenant, role modeling, rebuking and warning)
are god teaching us?
Why God brought charges against them
Verse 1: prophet Jeremiah mentioned: “Therefore I bring charges against you and I will bring charges against your children’s children” declares the Lord.
We all know that God is filled with love, He loves His chosen people. Why would God bring charges against His people and against their children’s children? The reasons are very clear, because the chosen people broke the covenants, they betrayed and forsook Him. “Charge” (accusation) is a law terminology, it means you accuse formally or explicitly in court. At that time among the Israeli, once a charge had been sent to court, the verdict would be very disadvantageous to them. Naturally, they would be punished severely, because they had broken the covenants of God again and again.
Reflection: Do I meet God’s will or go against it? Or have I done something terrible to infuriate God to make Him bring charges against me?
People leave God to glorify worthless idols
The Israeli left God to worship worthless idols. That was a sheer stupidity. Therefore, God questioned His people because of their weakness in forsaking Him and in burning incense to other gods. He said: “Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols. And they have forsaken me; the spring of living water and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. O heavens, and shudder with great horror,” declares the Lord.
P.S. Kittims is located at the west side of Cyprus. Kedar is a desert region located at the east side of Palestine where were the habitations of the Gentile.
Reflection: Have I ever had any painful experiences of forsaking God and glorified
those worthless idols in the past? Will I ever dare to do it in the future?
Israeli’s worship attitude were worse than the gentile
Whether it is Kittim or Kedar or any other place where the habitations of the Gentile were, they didn’t change their (yet they are not gods at all) gods. But the Israeli (God’s chosen people) changed to serve worthless gods. So, the Israeli were worse than the Gentile.
From nowadays point of view, there are some people that say in a humorous way: Devout worship in worthless idols, impious to God. The Gentile worship in worthless idols. But their worship attitude is very religious and pious as if they worship the true God. On the other hand, we Christians worship the only true God. But our worship attitude is not so devout. We worship ceremoniously as if it were to worthless idols. It is an act duplicity. So from the aspect of worship attitude, there are a lot of Christian’s whose religious attitudes are worse than non Christian.
Reflection: How is my attitude of worship to God? Is my worship and service
attitude better or worse than the Gentile?
The decision they made will bring on them disaster they cannot
escape.
The prophet Jeremiah pointed out that the Israeli were foolish for making this kind of decision that brought on them a disaster they cannot escape. Jeremiah was very worried because the word came to him from Lord that they were going to be captivated, to become servants and slaves of nations. In fact, the Israeli were not born like this. They had honorable and a glorious status. Also, they had freedom and privileges. But their wrong choice brought on them the becoming of slaves of other nations. For their incorrect decision to change their ways, they got involved with south Egypt and north Assyria’s political conflict. They looked for trouble and asked for the punishment. The word of the Lord kept coming to Jeremiah: “Have you not brought this on yourselves by forsaking the LORD your God when he led you in the way?” “Why do they forsake me?”
decision? Have I ever experienced consequences for forsaking God and asking for punishment in my faith life.
We should trust in God, not to rely on people.
The Prophet Jeremiah also indicated: the Israel people committed the sin of not trusting in God, but relying on other nations (especially Egypt). Nations were ravaged by Egypt and Assyria. So Judah allied with gentile nations. It did not bring peace, but brought trouble and caused the fall of their nation into a bad situation that was never to be recovered. So, remember to not rely on power, but to rely on God completely.
Reflection: Do I rely more on talent and relation or just totally on God during
my service?
